Tweyimukye Wijagahe Mushroom Group

Tweyimukye Wijagahe mushroom group started as an offshoot of the Shika Jembe group. Shika Jembe group started as a group of 23 mainly young refugee men and women who came to study farming through the Block farming approach. After the second season of maize farming, the women in the group realized the need to start an income-generating activity that could generate income and provide home nutrition as they waited for the maize to be harvested. Five women from Shika Jembe mobilized other women to start the group.

With support from the Gwayaka Incubation Centre, 15 members of the group were trained in mushroom farming. The group started with a small production, earning them about UGX 70,000 (USD 20) a week, and are now in the process of expanding the farm.

Gwayaka Incubation Centre worked with Ntasa manufacturers who offtake the mushroom and make different mushroom products. The farmers will also be trained in mushroom value addition.
